Happy Floye Dombalis Day!

It is with much joy and love that we wish a happy birthday to Floye Lee Dombalis.  For over 50 years, she has been a fixture at the Mecca, serving with her beloved husband, John, and her son, Paul, as our proprietress.  Born and raised in Erwin, NC, she is the second daughter of Paul and Lula Lee.

Floye and her second child, Mary Helen

Before working at the Mecca, Floye enjoyed a successful career in the insurance industry, working as an office manager for Security Life and, later, Penn Mutual.  Her office was located next door to the Mecca and, in 1946, she met the love of her life, John Dombalis, when he visited her office with a friend.

They were married in 1949, and had three children, Nick II, Mary Helen, and Paul.  Working side by side, Floye and John built upon Nick I’s success, making the Mecca a destination for some of the state’s most powerful politicians, businessmen, and judges.  Her dedication endures to this day, as she continues to carry on the legacy of her beloved husband behind our cash register during lunch.

A few years ago, the City of Raleigh declared July 28 to be Floye Lee Dombalis Day.  It was a well deserved award.  While July 28 may not be cause for city-wide celebration, it will always be a special day at the Mecca, as Floye is as much a part of our history as anyone.  This kind-hearted girl from rural Harnett County continues to charm our customers with her warm laugh, and has established a rich legacy of her own that will endure long after she’s gone.
